If you’re interested in the future of vehicle technology, you can be sure Toyota is in the game.

In a new statement, it has been announced that Toyota, Denso, Ericsson, Intel, and NTT Docomo have all teamed up to work on big data systems to support self-driving cars and other automotive tech advances. The group is being called the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium and has plans to add relevant global technology leaders to its ranks later this year.

One of the group’s biggest missions is improving real-time mapping and driving assistance. Taking these aspects from theory to practice, these acts will require handling data in large volumes while doing so securely.

“It is estimated that the data volume between vehicles and the cloud will reach 10 exabytes (10 billion gigabytes) per month around 2025, approximately 10,000 times larger than the present volume. This expected increase will trigger the need for new architectures of network and computing infrastructure to support distributed resources and topology-aware storage capacity,” said a statement from the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium group.

Along with this group, Toyota has taken multiple other steps toward advancing the concept of a “connected car.” We look forward to learning more details of this in the future.
